Activities and Attractions

Declared by The Guardian as “the best British beach you’ve never heard of” – choose from two stunning, unspoilt beaches. The first is easily reached from the Golf Club car park and offers miles of dog-friendly sand with stunning views out to the Moray Firth. Brora’s ‘back beach’ stretches out from the old Ministry of Defence Radio Station south of the village, where you can walk all the way to Golspie watching seals, sea otters and dolphins in the bay.

Transport yourself back to the Jurassic Period, searching for fossils on Brora Beach. Further afield, explore the wonderful Iron Age Broch at Carn Liath or immerse yourself in the romance of Dunrobin Castle. For a deeper dive into the area’s history, visit the newly restored Heritage Centre on the edge of the village, where Brora’s rich social, cultural and industrial past is revealed.

Visit the Highland Home of Johnnie Walker, where the rich Highland malt, enjoyed worldwide, is distilled. Founded in 1819 by the first Duke of Sutherland, Clynelish was one of the first purpose-built distilleries in Scotland. Now, the site boasts a state-of-the-art visitor centre with tasting tours, a shop and an amazing first-floor bar offering whisky, cocktails, mocktails, hot drinks and snacks.

There are so many walks to explore the area’s stunning scenery, including:
• Big Burn Walk: a brilliant short walk up a gorge to a waterfall. Allow an hour for this easy, circular walk from the Big Burn car park.
• Brora to Golspie coastal path: a leisurely half-day walk (one way) along some of Scotland’s most unspoilt coastlines passing sandy beaches, Iron Age settlements and the wonderful Dunrobin Castle. Catch the train from Golspie back to Brora.
• Riverside walk to Loch Brora: this winding path takes you through old coal mine workings, croft land and tranquil riverbanks. Walking a small section is easy if you don’t have a half day for the full circuit.
